Workshops

Picture
I have co-organized 5 annual workshops, co-sponsored by the University of Washington Center for Genomics and Healthcare Equality and the Indigenous Wellness Research Institute. Dr. Rose James (Lummi & Duwamish) and Polly Olsen (Yakama Nation) facilitated the first 4 workshops, and Dr. Robbie Paul (Nez Perce), and Abigail Echo-Hawk (Kitkehahki band of Pawnee Nation, Athabascan) added to the team facilitating the 5th. Many others were involved in the planning, implementation and evaluation of these workshops.

Workshop themes:  Were derived from participant feedback and included:
2011:  "What do we have, and what do we need?," featuring a panel of Native individuals who have completed degrees in various fields
2012:  "Money smarts: Organizing your financial house, making informed financial decisions, finding resources," featuring Danette Iyall, Karen Mattson, and elder, Lillian Chappelle
2013:  "Giving back to your community while away at college/university," featuring Dr. Jordan Lewis (Aleut) and elders, Fran James (Lummi) & Bill James (Lummi)
2014:  "Indigenous Knowledge, Power and Practice: Creating our Voice, Envisioning Our Path," featuring Dr. Linda Tuhiwai Smith (Maori) and Dr. Patrisia Gonzales (Kickapoo, Commanche, Macehual) (2014)
2015:  "Preparing Future Native American Health Leaders," conference co-sponsored and co-organized by Washington State University and Partnerships for Native Health; featuring Ada Deer, MSW (Menominee), Dr. Terry Maresca (Mohawk), Lance Echo-Hawk, MSW, and others  (2015)

Current and prospective students at any stage (high school/GED, through post-doctorate) and field of education were invited to attend. All costs were paid through grants so attendance, including travel and meals, were free to participants.

Workshops included ceremony, story-telling, personal reflection, sharing resources, and a hands-on workshop. For example, Polly Olsen led corn husk doll-making in 2012 (right), Fran James taught us to make cedar roses in 2013, and Patrisia Gonzales gave a plant medicine workshop in 2014 (left).
